Beginning Tuesday, a jury from the Silicon Valley will decide behind closed doors how much Samsung Electronics Co. owes Apple for copying certain features of the latter’s iPhone and iPad. While Apple is demanding a whopping $380 million as compensation, Samsung has countered that it owes only $52 million for using features such as ‘pinch to zoom’ in thirteen of its older-generation devices.
An earlier jury had declared that Samsung had infringed Apple’s patents in making and selling 26 products for which the South Korean company had to pay $1.05 billion. However, US District Judge, Lucy Koh has ruled that the previous jury had miscalculated the damages for 13 of the 26 products.
The new jury now is expected to begin deliberations on the issue on Tuesday after the respective lawyers deliver their closing arguments and the judge reads the instructions.
